We are here to serve the public . . .

yet we cannot exist without public help!

DID YOU KNOW . . .

Lifesavers are not paid. They volunteer their time to patrol the beach, to train others, to administer their clubs, to raise funds . . .

DID YOU KNOW . . .

Every lifesaver is fully qualified, having earned either the "Bronze Medallion" or "Surf Rescue Certificate" through a rigorous and intensive training course and then a 4-part examination. They learn surf awareness and survival skills, rescue techniques, communications, first aid, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and much more. Many then go on to earn other awards such as advanced resuscitation, IRB drivers, IRB Crew, Patrol Captains' Award, Instructors and Examiners.

DID YOU KNOW . . .

Every lifesaver must undergo an annual "proficiency check" in every award in which they are qualified, to learn new skills (and practise existing ones) and to keep their fitness levels up to standard.

DID YOU KNOW . . .

Lifesaving clubs receive very little in the way of Government grants or other assistance. Virtually every cent which it takes to provide the volunteer patrols on the beach has to be raised by the volunteer members themselves.

DID YOU KNOW . . .

Lifesaving equipment is very expensive. For example, "rubber ducks" or inflatable rescue boats cost about $15,000. Hand-held radios cost between $1000 and $3500. And all this (and much more) once again has to be raised by the volunteer lifesavers.

DID YOU KNOW . . .

The band-aids, stingose, Oxygen and other first-aid equipment so freely given out by the lifesavers has to be paid for by the surf lifesaving club - again, with money raised by the members. Even petrol for the outboard motors has to be purchased! And then there's the light and power bills, telephones, postage . . .

DID YOU KNOW . . .

Surf Lifesavers participate in intra-club, inter-club, regional, state and National competition for two main reasons: (a) competition keeps surf lifesavers fitness and skill levels at their peak; and (b) the world-renowned camaraderie of Surf Life Saving is best demonstrated by competition. One minute you are sworn enemies with the guy, girl or team next to you - and five minutes later you are sharing a drink and great times with them. That's Surf Life Saving.
